Memorial Service Scheduled for March 4
Hospice of North Central Ohio has scheduled a Memorial Service for Sunday, March 4 at 2 p.m. at Ontario Free Methodist Church, 220 Bedford Boulevard in Ontario.
The Memorial Service is a meaningful way to remember loved ones, and is open to anyone in the community. Included in the service of remembrance is a special message and special music. A candle will be lit during the service in memory of loved ones. Participants are welcome to take the candle home following the service. An informal reception will be held after the service.

Retreat for Women Grieving Significant Other
Hospice of North Central Ohio is offering a Healing Journey Retreat Friday, March 23 beginning at 6:30 p.m. and lasting through Saturday, March 24 at 2:30 p.m. The retreat will be held at Camp Mowana on Fleming Falls Road in Mansfield.
Specific to women who have lost a spouse or significant other in the prime of life, ages 40’s to 60’s, the retreat presents women with the opportunity to honor their grief. The focus of Friday night is self-care opportunities, including chair massage, reiki, aromatherapy, meditation and art activities. Saturday’s focus will feature the grief process.

Hospice Announces Training for Companion Volunteers
Hospice of North Central Ohio is offering several seven week training courses for those interested in becoming a Companion Volunteer. Companion Volunteers interact with hospice patients and their families, in a home setting or nursing home, providing companionship, support and comfort. Qualifications of a Companion Volunteer require a compassionate heart, strong commitment, and a willingness to assist others experiencing difficult times.
Training for this volunteer position includes the Hospice philosophy of care, death and dying, spiritual issues of the dying, and the role of the Hospice team. Participants will also learn about bereavement issues, the importance of teamwork, and specific issues pertaining to direct interaction with Hospice patients and their families.
Two sessions of classes will begin in February. One will be available at the Mansfield Office on 371 Cline Avenue. These classes are held from 6 – 9 p.m. on the following Thursdays: February 23, March 1, March 8, March 15, March 22, March 29 and April 5. Another session will be offered at Ashland’s Hospice House at 1050 Dauch Drive. These classes are scheduled from 1-4 p.m. on the following Mondays: February 27, March 5, March 12, March 19, March 26, April 2 and April 9.
Two more sessions of classes will be offered later in the year. Again, one will be held at the Mansfield Office on 371 Cline Avenue. These classes are scheduled from 1 – 4 p.m. on the following Thursdays: April 26, May 3, May 10, May 17, May 24, May 31 and June 7. The last session of the year is planned for Ashland’s Hospice House at 1050 Dauch Drive. These classes are from 6 – 9 p.m. on the following Thursdays: August 2, August 9, August 16, August 23, August 30, September 6 and September 13.

Raffle Winners Enjoy Romantic Dinner
John and Audrey Ralph, winners of the Valentine’s Day Raffle sponsored by What Goes ‘Round Thrift Shoppe, enjoyed a romantic dinner at the Skyway East February 14. The couple also won a box of candies from Squirrels Den and flowers from Floral Garden Florists, also part of the raffle package. Proceeds from the Valentine’s Day Raffle totaled $220 and benefit Hospice of North Central Ohio.
What Goes ‘Round Thrift Shoppe is filled with an eclectic mix of donated items, including clothing and accessories, shoes, jewelry, furniture, household goods, small appliances, and more. Donations for What Goes ‘Round Thrift Shoppe can be delivered to the Collection Center, located at 119 North Main Street in Mansfield, during store hours. Store hours are Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. For more information, please call 419-522-2890.

Youngsters Exemplify Giving Spirit
Jake Jones, age 15 and Bailey Jones, age 11 of Ashland donated all of the proceeds from their market goat and market sheep to Hospice of North Central Ohio’s Comfort Care Fund. The youngsters met with Hospice executive director Linda Hickey to hear how their donation will help others. The donation was in memory of the children’s grandfather, Gary Johnson, who was a patient at Hospice. According to the children’s mother, Amy Jones, Jake and Bailey spent a great deal of time working with their market animals. The entire family was touched by their decision to give all of their profits, which totaled over $2,000, to a charity.

Young Donor Helps Hospice
Linda Hickey, Hospice of North Central Ohio executive director, met with young donor Tyler Shank, a junior at Mapleton High School, and his parents, Angie and Don. In memory of his great grandmother Opal Hinkle, who had Hospice of North Central Ohio care, Tyler donated to Hospice a portion of his earnings from the sale of his hog at the Ashland County Fair.
