Hospice of North Central Ohio
Run to Remember
Ashland resident Emily Hess ran the Columbus Marathon in October of 2009 as part of the National Hospice Foundation's Run to Remember®. Emily ran in memory of her family members who experienced the special care of Hospice of North Central Ohio. Through her fundraising efforts, Emily was able to raise $4,760, surpassing her original goal of $1,500.00! The funds raised were divided between the National Hospice Foundation and Hospice of North Central Ohio.
Emily's story was also recently featured in the National Hospice Foundation 2010 Winter Quarterly Report. To see the article, visit http://www.nhpco.org/files/public/NHF/NHF_quarterly_Winter10.pdf.
Hospice thanks Emily for her hard work and dedication and everyone who contributed to her cause. Hospice of North Central Ohio is extremely grateful to have such wonderful advocates in the communities we serve

Since 1989...
Hospice of North Central Ohio continues to provide comfort, compassion, and dignity to many patients and families in local communities. Hospice care is available to any terminally ill patient with a limited life expectancy of six months or less. The best time to learn about Hospice is before you or a loved one needs it. Although end-of-life care may be difficult to discuss, it is truly best for family members to share their wishes long before it becomes a concern. This greatly reduces stress and pain when the time for Hospice becomes apparent. By having these discussions in advance, patients are not forced into uncomfortable situations. Instead, they can make an educated decision ahead of time that includes the advice and input of loved ones.
Hospice Philosophy
The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization defines the Hospice philosophy as:
''Hospice provides support and care for persons in the last phases of incurable disease so that they may live as fully and as comfortable as possible. Hospice exists in the hope and belief that through appropriate care, and the promotion of a caring community sensitive to their needs, patients and their families may be free to attain a degree of mental and spiritual preparation for death that is satisfactory to them. Hospice offers palliative care to terminally ill people and their families without regard for age, gender, nationality, race, creed, sexual orientation, disability, diagnosis, availability of a primary caregiver, or ability to pay.''
Hospice Care and Care Teams
Hospice care is available to any person of any age with any diagnosis who:
- Has a limited life expectancy if the illness runs its natural course
- Is no longer undergoing curative treatment
- Has an identified caregiver available or, if able to provide self-care at the time of referral, arranges to have a specific caregiver when future circumstances dictate
- Accepts the Hospice care philosophy
- Has a primary physician who approves admission.
Hospice care can be provided in either the home or in facility-based settings such as a nursing home, assisted living community, or hospital.
Physical, social, spiritual, and emotional care are provided during the last stages of illness, during the dying process, and during bereavement by a medically directed interdisciplinary team. The team consists of patients, family members, medical directors, nurses, social workers, home health aides, dietitians, chaplains, volunteers, music therapists, and speech, physical, and occupational therapists.
Thank You for your continued support...
